Daniel Augustine Dobbins, 87, of Pittsfield, IL passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Liberty Village Nursing Home in Pittsfield while surrounded by his family. He was born on January 8, 1931 in Martins Ferry, Ohio, the son of Daniel A. and Anna Marie Bieth Dobbins. He married Patricia Sue Sumpter on March 24, 1956 at St. Bonifice Church in Leading Creek, West Virginia.

Dan graduated from Clairton High School in Clairton, Pennsylvania in 1949. Following graduation from high school he enlisted in the US army, serving as a corporal in the Korean War. He graduated from Glenville State College in West Virginia in 1956, attending on the GI Bill. He met his wife Patricia, who was also a student, while at Glenville College.The couple began dating after they were voted Li’l Abner and Daisy Mae at the college’s annual Sadie Hawkins Day He then graduated from D T Watson’s School of Physiatrics, (affiliated with University of Pittsburg’s School of Medicine) in Leetsdale, Pennsylvania in 1957.

Dan was a lifetime member of the American Physical Therapy Association. He worked as a Physical Therapist at Minor Hospital in South Williamson, Kentucky. He later relocated to the Midwest to take a job as Chief Physical Therapist at St. Mary’s Hospital in Quincy, IL and then at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield and Beardstown Hospital. Dan was a member of St Mary’s Catholic Church in Pittsfield and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Dan had a great love for his family and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved to swim, fish and hunt. He especially looked forward to fall and deer hunting season. He also enjoyed working with stained glass, listening to music, reading and coin collecting.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia and his daughters, Loretta (Steve) Grote and Michelle (John) Westbrook, all of Pittsfield and his sons, Daniel (Mickey) Dobbins of O’Fallon, IL and Brian (Mary) Dobbins of Springfield, IL He is also survived by his sisters, Josephine Brezenay of Ellicott City , Maryland and Mary Ann Hobaugh of Los Vegas, Nevada. He is survived by eight grandchildren, Paul, Nick and Daniel Grote, Jacob Westbrook, Allison Schaal, Ben and Joe Dobbins and Debbie Kramer and three great grandsons, Owen Schaal, Camden Kramer and Lincoln Grote.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Daniel Dobbins and a sister, Patricia Walter.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 9:30 AM on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pittsfield with Father Mark Schulte as celebrant. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with prayers at 4:00 on Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield. Interment will be in the Calvary Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Catholic Church or Illini Community Hospital Physical Therapy Department.
