Karen Elizabeth Berry Crawford

Karen Elizabeth Berry Crawford, 63, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

Karen was born July 2, 1954, and lived her entire life in Lake Charles, La. She was the oldest of six children. She graduated from St. Louis Catholic High School in 1972 and from McNeese State University in 1976. Karen was a devoted and dedicated educator in Calcasieu Parish for over 40 years teaching P.E. and math, coaching softball, tennis, and cheer mostly at S.J. Welsh Middle School, Barbe High School, and most recently her beloved alma mater St. Louis Catholic High School.

She leaves behind her devoted husband of 43 years, Joe Crawford; her cherished daughters, Jill (Jeremy) Higdon of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Jaime Crawford of Lake Charles; her treasured sons, Joey (Amelia) Crawford and John Paul Crawford both of Lake Charles; two beloved grandsons, Crawford Higdon and Joseph Paul Crawford III; her mother, Kathleen Berry; and sisters, Diane (Jimmie) Murphy of Lake Charles, Susan Eaton and Jean (Mac) Lander of Houston; her brothers-in-law, Harry Dupree and Dr. Johnny Crawford (Anna); sisters-in-law, Phyllis Solari (Jim), Mary Higdon (Danny), Carolyn Toups (Joe), Susan Meche, Christine Crawford, and Charmayne Crawford; many nieces and nephews and countless students, athletes, and cheerleaders who considered her their second mom.

It would be impossible to name or count the number of lives that Karen touched, inspired, and encouraged. It was her calling for sure, and she served God well in that capacity.

Karen was preceded in death by her brother Chris Berry and her sister Joan Berry Dupree.

Karen’s Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017, at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Monsignor Daniel Torres will officiate. Burial will follow at Consolata Cemetery. Visitation will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017, at 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home with a rosary being recited at 6 p.m. Visitation will resume on Thursday morning at 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Bryan Kee and his team at M.D. Anderson, Dr. Michael Broussard for his kindness, concern, and great care of Karen during her illness, as well as Wendy Roach and the nurses at the LCMH chemo bay who made her feel like she was at a spa instead of treatment. Very special thanks goes to all her cheerleaders, cheerleader moms, special friends, and prayer groups who never allowed her to be without powerful prayers and anything else she may have needed.
