Matthew Colgan was born in Ireland around 1830. Second-hand information currently indicates that he came from County Kildare. Original Irish sources are under research. He married his wife Margaret Connelly at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. They had 9 children and lived in Philadelphia in the 15th Ward, where Matthew was a grocer at the time of his death from TB around age 40 in 1870. He was associated with the Bishop Garland Beneficial Society and Bishop Hughes Beneficial Society, both Catholic organizations.

Likely immigrated to U.S. on July 15, 1850, aboard the Ship Lord London from Dublin to New York City with a Patrick Colgan (born about 1810).

More than half a dozen Colgans from this family immigrated to the United States from Ireland in the wake of an Gorta Mór (the Great Famine), beginning circa 1850, and likely accomplished by chain migration. The exact number and identities are still under research, but the known members of the immigrant generations were:

Patrick Colgan (Born Abt. 1810)
Mary Colgan (Abt. 1820-1863)
