Actor. He was best known for his role as 'Major Charles Emerson Winchester' on the popular CBS Korean War television situation comedy-drama "M*A*S*H" from 1977 to 1983. He was also known for his role of 'Rev. Gene Purdy' on the USA Network series "The Dead Zone" from 2002 to 2007. He began his acting career in Northern California, acting in San Francisco at the Actors' Workshop. He later moved to New York City, New York, where he studied drama at Juilliard School of performing arts, and joined the Houseman Acting Company at its outset, working on various productions. He would go on to work in numerous theatrical productions throughout his career. He got his start in television in 1975 with an appearance on an episode of the CBS detective drama "Kojak". Besides "M*A*S*H" and "The Dead Zone", his television credits would include such series as "Doc", "Mary Tyler Moore", "North and South", "North and South, Book II", "Matlock", "Murder, She Wrote", "Love & Money", "Stargate: Atlantis", and "Rizzoli & Isles". He also appeared as the district attorney 'Michael Reston' in several Perry Mason television movies in the late 1980s. In 1971, he was the announcer on the film "THX 1138". He would go on to appear in numerous films during his career with such credits as ""Oh, God!" (1977), "The Cheap Detective" (1978), "Better Off Dead..." (1985), and "The Accidental Tourist" (1988). He also did voice work on numerous animated films and series such as "Beauty and the Beast" (1991), "Pocahontas" (1995), and "Lilo & Stitch" (2002). He was interested in classical music and served as a guest conductor for over seventy symphony orchestras through the years. He received several award nominations for both his work on "M*A*S*H" and other productions during his career. He passed away after a battle with bladder cancer.
