Samuel was the son of the late Charles W. May and Grace Midkiff May and the husband of Georgia May. Samuel and Georgia had one daughter: Sandra L. May of Poquoson, Virginia; one son, Samuel E. (Bo) May, Jr. of Huntington and 4 grandchildren: Sam and Charlie Ratcliff and Brett and Whitney May.

Sam was a US Army veteran, having served during the Korean conflict. He was a fifty year member of the Grand Lodge of West Virginia, He was a 1949 Cum Laude graduate of Marshall University and was self-employed in the dry cleaning business in Barboursville during the 1950's. He retired from a pharmaceutical and medical equipment sales career.
