Larry W. Ziehme, age 94, of Menomonie was called to his heavenly home on Friday, March 30, 2007.

He was born in the Town of Weston, Dunn County, Wis., on April 12, 1912, to William and Blanche (Kizer) Ziehme. The family moved to Glen Flora, Wis., in 1918, where Larry attended the Glen Flora Grade School, graduating from the eighth grade. In 1928, his family moved to Hawkins, Wis., where Larry attended Hawkins High School, graduating in 1931. His family then moved back to the Hatchville area to run the Ziehme farm.

Larry started his own carpenter business, working at that for 8 years. He married Margaret A. Oebser on Nov. 18, 1939 and moved to Spring Valley, Wis., where Larry worked for Pence Auto Co. for a short time. Because of the war, gas, tire and car rationing he went to work in Eau Claire, where he again used his carpenter skills and helped build the Eau Claire Ammunition Plant. He and Margaret moved to Eau Claire after the Spring Valley flood and he joined the Auxiliary Military Police and served as a guard at the Ammunition Plant. After the war, they moved back to the Hatchville area, where they both worked and lived at Connell's Sunridge Orhcard for 12 years. In 1956, Larry and Margaret purchased the Hatchville Store. After operating the store for 21 years, they closed the store in 1977 and lived in Hatchville until 1997, when they moved to their apartment in Menomonie.

Larry enjoyed traveling, hunting, ice fishing, reading and working crossword puzzles. He loved to play cards and watch football and baseball on TV. Larry spent every fall looking for wild ginseng until he could no longer walk in the woods. This was a pastime that he and Margaret enjoyed so much and spent many hours doing together.

Larry was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hatchville for over 60 years. He served on the church council and the building committee for the new church. He was also a board member of St. Johns and Oak Ridge Cemetery Associations and he served on the Town of Lucas election board as head inspector for 38 years.

Larry is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margaret; his daughter, Sharon (Charles) Bowell of Knapp; granddaughter, Lori (Brian) Baker of Madison; grandson, Steven (Lisa) Bowell of Knapp; great-grandson, Tanner Bowell; and step great-grandson, Luke Olson; his brother, Glen (Doris) Ziehme of Menomonie; three sisters-in-law, Judy Ziehme of Cumberland, Elsie Knospe and Constance Oebser of Menomonie; a brother-in-law, Leonard Fuhrman of Menomonie; many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Eugene "Russell", Galen, Garlen, Gerald and his sister Maxine (Richard) Brown.

Larry lived his life helping others. He will be remembered always for his kindness, his generosity and for always being there for whoever needed his help.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2007, at St. John's Lutheran Church at Hatchville, with Pastor Shawn Kauffeld officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Family and friends are welcome from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie and at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday.
