Gladys Vanessa Gates Scales, 91, of Ararat, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at R.J. Reynolds-Patrick County Memorial Hospital.

She was born April 22, 1909, in Patrick County and was a daughter of the John and Annie Della Scales Gates.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jefferson Davis Scales; three sons: John Cardwell Scales, Jasper Stewart Scales and Jerry Bryan Scales; a grandson, David Cardwell Scales; two sisters: Eva Carter and Irene Smith; and four brothers: Cecil Gates, Elmer Gates, Nelson Gates and Wesley Gates.

She was a homemaker and was a member of Hunter's Chapel Church.

Surviving are five daughters: Jane Fulk, Daisy Barnard, Faye Young, Rachel Barnes and Annie S. Talbert; two sons: Jefferson Davis Scales Jr. and James Wesley Scales, all of Ararat; four sisters: Lena Inman and Vergie Inscore, both of Mount Airy, N.C., Maxie George of Westfield, N.C., and Louise Berry of Durham, N.C.; 20 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Hunter's Chapel Church by the Rev. Luther McCann. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Arrangements were by Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
