James L. Wilks

James Lewis Wilks was born August 31, 1936 in Abilene, Texas and died March 2, 2018 in Austin, Texas. His parents were James Garnett and Lucille Adrian Wilks. He was raised in Trent, Texas where he graduated from high school. He went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Abilene Christian College and ultimately graduated with a law degree from the University of Houston Law School.
While still at Abilene Christian he met and married Marjorie Morrow Wilks, who has been his love and companion for more than 60 years. James was the proud father of Debra Ann Wilks, of Fredericksburg, Texas and Lewis Adrian Wilks of Sugar Land, Texas. He loved and cherished his grandchildren, Morgan Wilks, Berkeley Wilks Griffith and Braxton Wilks.
Jim found his vocation in the law. On December 4, 2017 he celebrated 50 years in the practice, most of that time in Sweetwater, Texas. In addition to the law, Jim and two of his long-time friends owned and operated the Gibson’s store in Kerrville, Texas, which passed the 50 year mark on February 18 of this year.
Jim built his life around service to others. In his younger years, he was a boy scout, the Skipper of the Sub T-16 fraternal organization at Abilene Christian, a member of Phi Delta Phi, the Order of Barons and Associate Editor of the Law Review. He served his home church, 4th and Elm Street Church of Christ, in many capacities, including deacon, elder, teacher and song leader. He supported missionary work in Mexico and the Eastern European Mission to provide Bibles in the Ukraine. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Sweetwater Independent School District, including a term as President. He served on the Texas Association of School Boards and was President of the Chamber of Commerce. He also served many charitable organizations including Disability Resources, the ACU Foundation and the West Texas Rehab Center.
Jim was a member of the Lions Club. He served the Lions in every possible capacity on the local, regional, district and state level. He served as Parliamentarian at the 2007 International Lions Club Convention in Chicago, Illinois. Jim was elected to the Texas Lions Hall of Fame in 2008. In 2015 he served as the President of the Board of Directors of the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville, Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; his children, Debra and Lewis, his daughter-in-law, Kimberly Wilks; and his grandchildren, Morgan Wilks, her fiancé Robert McCall, Berkeley Wilks Griffith, her husband David, and Braxton Wilks. He leaves behind, his brother Don G. Wilks and his sisters, Linda Romick and Marilyn Copeland. He will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, co-workers, colleagues and friends.
Funeral services will be 2 P.M. Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Fourth and Elm Church of Christ with Michael Harbour and Ben Mereness officiating. Interment will follow at the Garden of Memories directed by McCoy Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5 to 7 P.M. at McCoy Funeral Home, 401 East Third, Sweetwater, Texas.
Pallbearers will be Braxton Wilks, Russell Kemp, Edward Hodge, Kary Kent, Chris Maxwell, Cody Paty, Jack Needham, Al Hunt.
Honorary pallbearers will be Tony Ham, Jerry Riggs, Joe Paty, Glen Murphree, Vershel Smith.
