OLD ORCHARD BEACH - Former Old Orchard Beach resident, Attilio V. Angelosante, 89, of South Pasadena, Fla., died on Saturday at The Springs Nursing Care Facility. He was born in Portland on Dec. 30, 1915, a son of Albert and Madeleine Amatrosa Angelosante. He was educated in Old Orchard Beach schools and graduated from Old Orchard Beach High School in 1934. While in high school he was a member of the basketball team which played its home games in the Town Hall Auditorium. During World War II he served as a Chief Motor Machinist in the Atlantic Theatre aboard submarines. Following his discharge he was briefly employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. During the war, following the death of their father, his brother converted the family take out and restaurant located on the corner of Union and Saco Avenues to a gas station. When he returned from the war he joined his brother in forming a partnership, Sante Brothers, which included heating oil. During the summer months they also operated tourist cabins, which they operated for 55 years. He spent the winter months in Florida returning to Maine in the summers until this summer when his health did not permit him to do so. In Florida, as a hobby he reconditioned bicycles for the needy children and retirees. He was an ardent Red Sox fan. He was a Life Member of the Biddeford-Saco Lodge of Elks, a Charter Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the C. Fayette Staples Post, American Legion, and a former member of the Old Orchard Beach Chamber of Commerce. He was also a parishioner of St. Margaret's Parish. He was known for his support of many charitable and civic projects in Old Orchard Beach. A few years ago he established the Angelosante Family Scholarship Fund at Old Orchard Beach High School.
