Composer. Born Harvey Lester Schmidt, he is best remembered for composing the music to the off-Broadway show "The Fantasticks", in collaboration with lyricist Tom Jones, which ran from 1960 until 2002 and became the longest running musical in history. He was the recipient of the Tony Award in 1992 for his contribution to "The Fantasticks" and in July 2012 he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He died at the age of 89.
