Herman William Wickenheiser
February 16, 1924 – February 28, 2018

Herman William Wickenheiser, 94, of Carleton, passed away in his home on February 28 after a lengthy illness. He was the son of August J and Lena (Rivard) Wickenheiser, born February 16, 1924. He married Elaine Geiermann on June 13, 1953 at St. Patrick Church in Carleton.

Herman was a life-long resident of Carleton, graduating from St. Patrick Grade School and Carleton High School. He worked at the Willow Run bomber plant before joining the Army Air Corps where he became a pilot and earned the rank of Second Lieutenant. When the war ended, he began his career in the home improvement industry and owned Wickenheiser Home Supply.

He was a member of the Monroe County Landlord Association, the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, a board member of Marian Place, and a life-long member of Divine Grace Parish (St. Patrick Church) where he served as an usher.

Herman had a passion for flying and was known for his sense of humor, playful nature, and mischievous personality. He loved being surrounded by his family especially his grandchildren. Herman was never idle, and was always looking for a project. He loved spending time with his family in northern Michigan or wintering in Sun City, Arizona.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years and children Margaret Sroka (Bruce MacBride), John (Deirdre) Wickenheiser, Mary Wickenheiser (Ron Baxter), Charlene (Dave) Ryder, Dolores (Bill) Stotz, Janice (Chuck) Byron, Gerald Wickenheiser, Patrick (Mary Ellen) Wickenheiser, James (Jodie) Wickenheiser, Kenneth Wickenheiser, and Kevin (Sarah) Wickenheiser; 33 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; his sister Rita Zochowski; sisters-in-law Ellen Wickenheiser and Theresa Balk; brother-in-law Oscar Vandevelde; along with many nieces and nephews.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Lawrence (Rosemary), Earl and Cletus (Pauline); sisters Clara (Al) Joblinski, Rosemary (Julian) Zochowski, Agnes Vandevelde, Teresa (Irving) Reaume, and Helen; and son-in-law Ron Sroka.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 8 p. m. on Friday, March 2, at Rupp Funeral Home where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Herman will lie-in-state on Saturday, March 3 at 10 a.m. at Divine Grace Parish (St. Patrick Church) in Carleton, followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 11:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Giancarlo Ghezzi. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery.

Memorial donations are suggested to St. Patrick Catholic School.
