Thomas served as a Staff Sergeant & Gunner on B-24D "Ten Knights in a Bar Room" #42-72806, 321st Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Missouri prior to the war.
B-24D #42-72806 took off, with a crew of 10, from the Ward Drome (APO #929), National Capital District, Papua New Guinea on a bombing mission over Wewak, Wewak District, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea.
After a successful bombing run they were attacked by a Japanese fighter plane which damaged their #2 engine and eventually the B-24 caught fire. They crashed near Wewak with the entire crew lost.
Thomas was first declared "Missing In Action" in this crash and once his remains were recovered after the war his status was changed to "Killed In Action".
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
