Gene Edward “Hoppy” Robertson Sr. 78, of Madison, Illinois passed away at 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at Rosewood Care Center in Edwardsville.

He was born December 25, 1939 in Granite City, the son of the late Edward Earl and Aleene Mary (Anderson) Robertson.

He married Carol Jean (Svoboda) Robertson on June 17, 1977 in Venice, Illinois and she survives.

He retired in 2002 from Granite City Steel after 38 years of dedicated service as a security guard. He had also served 32 years as an auxiliary police officer and served several years as a Police Commissioner with the Madison Police Department.

Gene was a proud member of the N.R.A., was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and cherished his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved attending car shows and going to flea markets and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.

In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by three daughters, Teri Lake and fiancé, Carl Gansner of Granite City, Lisa Karius of Granite City and Amy Winn and fiancé, Ryan Campbell of Granite City; a son, Gene Edward Robertson Jr. and wife, Barbara of Garden City, Kansas; eight grandchildren, Whitney Lake, Emily Lake, Kari Robertson, Corey Robertson, Joey Robertson, Hayle Karius, Morgan and Tiffany Frame and Shelby Winn; six great grandchildren, his beloved Ellie Bug, Noah, Cameron, Jaxon, Lukas, Danica and Eddie; a sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Frank Cowley of Granite City; nieces and nephews, Cindy Scheiter, Ed and Becky Cowley, Pam and Greg Sullivan, Lisa and John Davis and Richard Svoboda, all of Granite City; other extended family and many friends.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Sunday, March 4, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 5, 2018.

Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Edwardsville.

Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children and may be accepted at the funeral home.
