Barney's father died in 1878, and Barney Martin must have left his family to be on his own by 1880 since he does not appear on the family's census records for that year. His whereabouts after that were sketchy. The family had very few records apart from his final address in Redwood City, California. Census records suggest that he moved from place to place over the years always working as a harness maker. He never married.
Layng Tinney Mortuary records show that he died in his 80s having spent his last days boarding at Redwood City's Peninsula Hotel on El Camino Real. Those same records are uncertain about who his parents were as well as where they were from. While the mortuary's records show him born on May 2, 1854, early census records show 1859 and 1861, and a tentative birthdate was set from that here.
