While a youth he moved with his parents to Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada, lived there a few years, then in 1856 with his parents moved to Davis Co., Iowa. On Aug. 25, 1863, he was married to Mary Miller, daughter of Peter and Anna Miller, one of the first Amish families to live in Davis county. He lived in matrimony 50 y. 4 m. To this union were born 13 children, 8 sons and 5 daughters. Two daughters, 13 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild preceded him to the spirit-world. He left to mourn his departure his beloved companion, 8 sons, 3 daughters, 34 grandchildren, and many friends and neighbors, brothers and sisters in Christ.
In early life he accepted Jesus, united with the A. M. In 1879 he moved to near Milford, Neb., at which place he labored faithfully and actively unto the end. At the first Western District A.M. Conference held in Cass County Mo. in 1890 Joseph was elected as first Conference moderator, serving as either moderator or assistant modertor ten times between 1890 - 1904. Joseph had a hand in organizing A.M. churches from the Missouri River to Oregon, from South Dakota to Oklahoma. At the 1891 conference, he and Christian Rediger of Aurora, Nebr. were appointed as evangelists to visit the scattered churches in the west. Funeral services were held on the 28th at the East Fairview Church, conducted by the bishop and ministers, Peter Kennel, Jake and Joseph Birkey, Fred Gingerich, Christian Rediger, Joseph Zimmerman.
