She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother who was very much loved and will be greatly missed. Always very spunky and vivacious she never held back from expressing opinions and giving advice.
Ruth will always be remembered as the “Greatest” school bus driver of all times in Jefferson County. She won the “School Bus Rodeo Award” several times. Children loved riding on her bus where she drove routes through Fultondale, Gardendale, and Mt. Olive for many years. She always volunteered to drive for school event trips and ball games. When she retired many of her former passengers came to thank her and wish her well.
A longtime member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Ruth enjoyed attending Gardendale’s First Baptist Church in her later years. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Edward Garrett, and her sisters.
She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Sands (Terry) of Shelby, AL; her grandchildren, Courtney Jordan “CJ” Sands, Brayden Garrett Sands, and Vera “Aly” Sands; her sisters; several nieces, nephews, and many friends. A visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 6 until 8 PM at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel followed by chapel services on Friday beginning at 10 AM.
Interment will be in Oakwood Memorial Gardens.
