Linwood joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in the Western United States and West Germany. He served in Taegu, South Korea during the Korean War, with the Reconnaissance Tactical Squadron. With the GI Bill he obtained a degree in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University, and began a career with Duke Power Company, now Duke Energy. He spent the majority of his time with the company managing the local Duke Power branch in Chester, SC, from 1965 until his retirement in 1988.
He was a leader in the Chester County community, having served as the President of the Rotary International, The Sertoma Club and the Toastmasters, he was a founding member of The Chester Little Theater, and an active member of both the Moose Lodge and the Bethel United Methodist Church. In retirement Linwood volunteered with the American Red Cross Blood Services and as a tax return preparer with AARP. He enjoyed the American West, country music, woodworking, square dancing with the Chester County Circling Squares Square Dance Club, visiting the Smoky Mountains, writing short fiction, and visits from his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Linwood was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-three years, Lola Peedin Thompson, and all of his brothers and sisters, William Alton Thompson, Richard Lewis Thompson, Clarence Albert Thompson, Rexford Lee Thompson, Gladys Thompson Hood, Sidney Floyd Thompson Jr., Troy Ezra Thompson, Marjorie Grace Thompson Adams, and Larry Edison Thompson.
