Funeral Services for Mr. Walter E. Newman, 82, who entered into rest February 25, 2018, will be conducted Thursday morning at 11 o’clock from the Posey Funeral Chapel. Rev. Charles E. Brown and Rev. Larry Newman officiating. Entombment in Pineview Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Newman was a native of Camden, SC, a former resident of Aiken having made North Augusta his residence for the past 49 years. He was a 1975 graduate of the University of South Carolina, Aiken with Honors receiving an AS degree in Criminal Justice, he received a BGS degree as a Cum Laude graduate in 1977 and in 1982 graduated FBINA, 131st. He was ordained a Minister in 1994 and served as the Pastor of the United Christian Church of North Augusta. Mr. Newman served as President of the North Augusta Lion’s Club, 1984-1985 and as a member of the Board of Directors of the North Augusta Chamber of Commerce, 1986-1988.

Mr. Newman entered law enforcement in 1957 as a Kershaw County Police Officer, was promoted in 1961 to the rank of Sergeant with the Aiken Police Department. In 1969, he was appointed Chief of Police for the City of North Augusta and in 1972 was appointed the Director of the North Augusta Department of Public Safety serving in that capacity until his retirement with 25 years of service in 1994. Chief Newman’s career in law enforcement spanned 37 years of service.

In 1968, Chief Newman was elected Charter President of the Fraternal Order of Police in South Carolina. He served as Chairman of the Public Safety Task Force, Lower Savannah Regional Council of Governments from 1969-1976, was awarded the 1971 Policeman of the Year at the Jesse C. Lynch Memorial American Legion Post #71 and was the 1971 Police Officer of the Year with the Exchange Club of North Augusta. Chief Newman was the President of the South Carolina Police Chief’s Association from 1975-1977, in l976 he received the South Carolina Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officer’s Association and he served as President of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association from 1978-1979. He was the Chairman of the Patrol and Tactical Sub-Committee, IACP from 1981-1985 and in 1999 received a IACP Life Membership. In l982, Chief Newman received a Life Membership with the South Carolina Police Officers Association and in l993 he served as Vice-President of the CSRA Law Enforcement Association.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Loretta Brown Newman; a son, Mark Newman, Graniteville; two daughters, Roxanne (Gary) Nickell and Kim (Phillip) Mottel, all of North Augusta; seven grandchildren, Lindsey Pitts, Austin Newman, Hunter Mottel, Haley Mottel, Tina Priester, Hope Jordan and William Harper; five great-grandchildren; three brothers and four sisters.

Pallbearers will be Austin Newman, Hunter Mottel, William Harper, Joe Jordan, Brian Pitts and Greg Staford.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 5 until 7.
