Mrs. Barbara J. (Rowland) Bemiss, a lifelong resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer at the Youville Hospital in Cambridge with her loving family by her bedside. She was 64 years old.

Barbara was born on January 30, 1945 in Boston, one of three children. Mrs. Bemiss was raised and educated in Melrose and graduated from the Chandler Secretarial School. Barbara was the receptionist/secretary at Dr. Robinson’s optometry office in Melrose for many years, She worked as a secretary/receptionist for Scottish Rite Valley of Boston and Russell Reynolds in Boston and others. A very active and longtime member of the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church, where she was involved with the Women’s Guild, fellowship committee, and taught Sunday School. She was also a long time member of Theta Psi.

Barbara loved being a mother and grandmother and enjoyed spending time with children and grandchildren. She enjoyed the beach, baseball, watching the Red Sox, knitting and playing golf.

Barbara was the beloved wife of Alan P. Bemiss with whom she shared 42 years of marriage. Loving daughter of Richard Rowland of Woburn and the late Betty (Coburn) Rowland. Loving mother of Scott Bemiss and his wife Kathleen of Bedford, NH, Brian K. Bemiss and his wife Lora of Quincy, and Philip M. Bemiss and his wife Julie of Atlanta, GA. Dear sister of Kenneth D. Rowland and his wife Susan of Manchester-by-the-Sea and Charlotte A. Woodard and her husband Ben of Elkton, FL. Cherished grandmother of William E., Madeline R., Sophia B., and Caitlyn L. Bemiss.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Melrose Highlands Congregational Church, 355 Franklin St., Melrose, Wednesday, May 27 at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose, Tuesday 4-8 PM. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. Gifts in Barbara’s memory may be made to the National Brain Tumor Society, 124 Watertown St., Suite 2D, Watertown, MA 02472.
