When Walter Tonkin was born on April 2, 1920, in Detroit, his father, John, was 31 and his mother, Anna (née Toffanoff), was 27. He had two younger brothers, Speedo and William. He died on March 16, 1944, at the age of 23.

Joined the Royal Canadian Air Force when England entered the war. In 1942 he joined the US Army Air Force.
Killed in action: Shot down over Belgium on his fiftieth mission.
