This is my Grandmother. She was born in Knoxville, IL, and married my Grandfather in 1940, I think. They lived in Illinois, Texas, Massachusetts, Iowa, and Minnesota. My Grandma taught in a one-room schoolhouse. At some point, she was in a bad car accident on the country roads in Illinois and this made her skittish about driving after that. She had infinite patience and did crossword puzzles with competitive vigor. Her handiwork took the form of sewing custom-made clothes for my Barbies, a whole trunkful of them! She sewed, knitted, crocheted, did needlepoint, cross-stitch. I remember her drawing an outline of my hand to make me adorable mittens every year. Her favorite drink was gin and 7Up and she smoked Salem cigarettes. I know she loved to dance with my Grandfather, but was quite shy. In the early dark days of mastectomies, she had one in the 1950s where they basically removed everything down to the bone. Brutal. She played cards with me, taught me solitaire and allowed me to do just about whatever I wanted when we were together, making forts out of all the dining furniture and serving me lunch inside my constructed abode. Going swimming as many times a day as we wanted (9231 Nicolette Ave, Minneapolis, MN). I loved her and have missed her regularly since 1979.
