Sgt.; Staff, 9th Kentucky Cavalry, USA, Civil War; enlisted August 7, 1862; mustered in August 10, 1862 at Eminence, Henry County; resident of Shelby County; prom. to Hospital Steward / Surgeon; mustered out September 11, 1863, at Eminence, Henry County.
He was the son of Gilbert Hankins and Rebecca Carriss. Studied medicine under Dr. J. B. Burk, of Harrisonville, Shelby County, Ky. from spring 1850 - 1853; attended the Kentucky School of Medicine at Louisville for one session in 1854; began practice at Harrisonville, Shelby County in 1855. He married February 23, 1860, Louisa Hedden. This marriage produced the following children: Evart and Lillian Hankins. He returned to practice at Harrisonville immediately upon discharge from service, and also served as Postmaster of Harrisonville from about 1866.
