Gerald Edwin Burns, 70, died suddenly January 29, 2018 at his apartment in Birmingham, Alabama. He was born May 16, 1947, in Vancouver, Washington to Bennie N. and Addie Mae Burns. In June 1966, he graduated from Hudson's Bay High School in Vancouver, Washington, where he excelled in boxing.

Gerald is survived by his first wife, Patricia Burns; and second wife, Odessa Burns; one son, Donnell Burns; three daughters: LaTonya Hulso, Chanera Burns and step-daughter Nakhea Smitherman; two siblings: Benford Burns and Eloise Thompson; three grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, his mother, and his sister, Delores Hayes.

An informal scattering of ashes ceremony was held in 2019 in Vancouver, Washington.
