Clara Selvage Barnes Greene
May 4, 1919 - November 4, 2013
She helped her parents and others carry rocks to build the DAR School at Grant, and she was one of the first pupils in the first grade there. She was supervisor of the kitchen at Camp Maranatha in Jackson County. She was a member of Free Home Baptist Church for 80 years. She believed that being around young people kept you young. A Grant resident most of her 94 years, she would tell about playing in Bat Cave now known as Cathedral Caverns. She loved to cook, sew and sing, and was an avid reader. She was preceded in death by her parents, Payton and Lilla Selvage; husbands Ernest Barnes and Julius Greene; sister, Ilera Padgett; brothers, William Selvage and Thedo "T. T." Selvage and wife Viola; grandson, Micky Whorton; son-in-law, William Whorton; and great-great-grandchild, Emily Walker. She is survived by two daughters, Edith Ann Barnes Early (Douglas) and Ernestine "Tina" Barnes Whorton; grandchildren, Vickie Chadwick (Roy), Melinda Hansard (Jason), Renee Epps (Ricky), Tammy Dixon (David), Blake Early, Don Early (Sheila), and Brian Early (Becky); brothers Minzo "M.C." Selvage (Sadie) and Glendon Selvage (Jean) and sister-in-law, Louise Selvage. Bro. Radford Pritchett and Bro. Douglas Early officiated the funeral service.
