He was born Dec. 6, 1935, in Rock Springs, WY, the son of George and Mary Whaley Newton.
He married Phyllis Belford and they later divorced. He later married Elizabeth Camblee Newton and she preceded him in death.
He is survived by two sons, James (Cara) Davenport of Harrisburg, IL and Ron (Kim) Davenport of Galatia, IL; one daughter, Diane Cox of Springfield, IL; seven grandchildren, Seth Cox and Drew Cox, both of Springfield, Christopher Davenport of Murphysboro, Ron Davenport, Jr, Stephen Davenport, and Brian Davenport, all of Galatia, and Katelyn Davenport; two sisters, Barbara (Ray) Dennis of Lawrence, KS, and Mary Anne (James) Kirkpatrick of Laramie, WY; and his longtime friend, Rose Glenn of Jacksonville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael Davenport; and two sisters, Georgia Radosavich and Kathleen McBride.
Mr. Newton was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he learned his trade as an electrician and later served with the Merchant Marines. He retired from Mobil Chemical in Jacksonville, where he worked as an electrician. He enjoyed attending The First Christian Church of Jacksonville with Rose. Ron loved camping, going to the beach, and daily walks at Community Park and Nichols Park.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Per his wishes, there will be no services. Memorial gifts are suggested to Jacksonville VFW Post #1379.
