The Death of an Old Citizen

Mr. A. W. Sneed died last Sunday morning of of obstruction of the bowels, after an illness of only about 80 hours.

He was interred in the Fairfield cemetery, Monday morning at 10 o'clock, in the presence of a great number of friends and relatives, Rev. A. J. Brown officiating.

Mr. Sneed was born in Georgia, May 24, 1820, consequently he was 74 years and 9 months old, and lived in Freestone county about 36 years.

He leaves four sons and two daughters, his wife having died about a year ago.

Having gone beyond the alloted three score years and ten, when the summons came he quietly and easily passed into that sleep that has no waking here. He was not a member of any church, simply a plain, straight forward, honest man. The minister spoke very feelingly at the burial, concerning the friendship that had existed between the deceased and his, the minister's father. He said that Mr.
Sneed had told him, not long since that he desired to be a Christian that he prayed every day. Who knows what the reception of that aged pilgrim was when he crossed to the echoless shore? Who knows what the reception of any one is?
Who can look into his own heart, or turn on the light as he scans the path that himself has made, and feel like passing judgement on his fellow-man? There is
a mighty heap in this sentence: "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God". One's voyage may be stormy, and yet the landing be peaceful. We don't know. Yet in the providence of God, when the staff of life fell from the
hands of this white-haired pilgrim, he may have found a welcome where age never bows the form and time never brings a sorrow. May it be so.
