C. Bernadette (McCarty) Long was born on Saturday; November 3, 1923 near Parnell; Iowa County, Iowa. Bernadette was the daughter of Daniel and Catherine (Weldon) McCarty. She graduated from Parnell High School and University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls; Black Hawk County, Iowa. Bernadette was united in marriage to Edward Cecil Long on Tuesday; June 11, 1946 in Parnell, Iowa. She taught rural school for two years, then became an elementary teacher, teaching Kindergarten, First and Fourth grades, at the Parnell Elementary School for 28 years. She was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Parnell, Altar and Rosary Society and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading and writing poetry. Bernadette has been a life long member of the Parnell community until becoming a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English five years ago. C. Bernadette (McCarty) Long, age 83, passed away on Saturday; March 31, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City; Johnson County, Iowa after a extended illness. Those left to mourn her passing are her husband: Cecil of Parnell; Iowa County, Iowa. A daughter: Catherine ( David) Malloy of Williamsburg; Iowa County, Iowa. Two sons: Dennis (Pat) Long and Gregory (Laurie) Long all of Aurora; Kane County, Illinois. Six grandchildren: Jennifer Thatcher, Julie Sigg, Elizabeth Faestel, Ryan Malloy, Molly McWilliam and Justine Long. A great grandson: Jack Thatcher; a brother: James McCarty of Parnell, Iowa and two sisters: Therese Weber of Washington; Washington County, Iowa and Marguerite Crane of Cedar Rapids; Linn County, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter: Cheryl Ann Long and a brother: Paul McCarty. May they rest in peace. Visitation will be on Monday; April 2, 2007 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the church. Also a prayer service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday; April 3, 2007 at the Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Parnell. Friar Pat Lumsden will officiate. Burial will be at the Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
