Douglas Allen Haynes, 63, Emporia, a former video-system manager and manufacturer's representative, died after a long illness Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka.

He was born July 8, 1954, in Emporia to Lacy C. Jr. and Barbara E. Haynes, and grew up in Emporia, where his father was a lawyer and former county attorney. He attended Walnut School and Lowther Junior High, graduating from Emporia High School in 1972. He attended Kansas State University and graduated from Emporia State University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in speech and a minor in sociology.

After college, he worked for Webb Telemedia, working on and managing video systems at race tracks, and settling in Santa Fe and later Rio Rancho, N.M. On Jan. 27, 1984, he married Nanette DeBruyn in Fergus Falls, Minn. They later moved to Emporia, where he worked for Camplex Corp. The couple later divorced.

For several years, he was a sales representative for Bradley Engineering, working from his home and traveling to electronics shows in the U.S. and overseas.

He was a member of the Rio Rancho and Emporia Presbyterian churches and a former board member of the William Allen White Community Partnership and the Lyon County Historical Society.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his children, Dr. Elsie Kathrine Haynes, Pueblo, Colo.; William Peterson Haynes, Pittsburgh, Pa; and Barbara Florence DeBruyn Haynes, Emporia; two brothers, Stephen C. Haynes, Oberlin, Kan., and Dr. Kenneth C. Haynes, Redding, Calif.; and a sister, Barbara Ann Blaylock, rural Emporia.

Cremation has occurred. A Celebration of Doug’s Life will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 1:00 PM at the Grape Arbor of Peter Pan Park, Emporia.

A memorial has been established to the Emporia Friends of the Zoo with contributions sent in care of Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, PO Box #175, Emporia, Kansas 66801
