Dr. James Carey Thomas, physician, philanthropist and educator, died suddenly last night at his home, 1225 Madison avenue.

Dr. Thomas was born in Baltimore, July 13, 1833. The family from which he was descended was from Wales and its authentic history is said to have commenced in the sixth century. Dr. Thomas' parents were Dr. Richard Henry and Martha Carey Thomas. ... His mother was a daughter of James Carey, president of the Bank of Maryland ...

... graduated from Haverford College, near Philadelphia, when nineteen years of age, receiving the degree of bachelor of arts. At the age of twenty-one he was graduated from the Maryland University School of medicine, and began the practice of his profession. ...

Eight children survive Dr. Thomas. They are Miss Mary Carey Thomas, president of Bryn Mawr College, Pennsylvania; Mr. J. M. W. Carey [?sic-Thomas], Philadelphia; Dr. H. M. Thomas, Mr. B. V. Thomas, Mrs. M. G. Worthington, Mrs. A. Morris Carey, Miss Helen W. Thomas and Mr. F. S. Thomas of Baltimore.

THOMAS - At his late residence, No. 1225 Madison avenue, at eight o'clock on the evening of November 9, Dr. JAMES CAREY THOMAS, in the 65th year of his age.

The funeral will be held at the Friends' Meeting House, corner of Eutaw and Monument streets, on this (Friday) morning, November 12, at 11.30 o'clock. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment private.

The funeral of Dr. James Carey Thomas took place at the Orthodox Friends' Meeting House. Interment was in Greenmount Cemetery.

------------------Dr. James Carey Thomas, who died Tuesday night, was buried yesterday in Greenmount Cemetery by the side of his wife, Mrs. Mary Whitall Thomas, who died in 1888.

Funeral services were held according to the ritual of the Orthodox Friends in the Meeting House, Eutaw and Monument streets, at 11.30 A.M. Prof. Rufus M. Jones, of Haverford college, of which Dr. Thomas is a trustee and alumnus, officiated, and Mrs. Ruth S. Murray, of Providence, R.I., read prayer.
