Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Hayes, 94, of Piqua, died at 12:44 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2007 in Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy, Ohio.
Betty was born in Piqua, July 12, 1912, the daughter of the late Leo A. and Edna (Roth) Thoma. She attended Piqua Catholic schools, graduating in 1930 from Piqua Central High School. She also attended St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana, following which she worked as a reporter for the Piqua Daily Call. Her next job was as secretary for the Nickel Plate Railroad in Chicago, Illinois.

In August 1942 she was married to Edgar A. Hayes of Hamilton, Ohio who preceded her in death in 1985. A brother, Robert L. Thoma, also preceded her in death, in 2001.
She was a member of St. Boniface Church and for several years was a Eucharistic Adorer of that parish. She was an honorary member of Fortnightly Club of Piqua.

Survivors include four sons and one daughter:

John (Jack) and Sherrie Hayes of Columbus, OH

Dr. James Hayes, Richmond, IN

Robert Hayes, Piqua
William Hayes, Chicago, IL

Mary Beth (Hayes) and Elton Rogers, Waukegan, IL
Two grandchildren – Edgar Evan Hayes and Mariel Chapman Hayes, Columbus, OH
A sister-in-law Delores Thoma, Speedway, IN

and a number of beloved nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 21 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Boniface Church, with the Reverend Angelo Caserta as celebrant. Burial will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery, Piqua.
