US Congressman, 56th Massachusetts Governor, Boston Mayor. He was a Democratic political force in Massachusetts for 48 years, starting with his election to the Massachusetts Legislature in 1902 to his defeat as Mayor of Boston in 1950. He was elected to two separate stints in the United States House of Representatives, representing first the 10th, then the 12th Massachusetts Districts, serving from 1911 to 1914. 29 years later he was elected to represent the 11th District, serving from 1943 to 1947. In 1934 he was elected as Governor of Massachusetts, serving from 1935 to 1937. Despite his State and National offices, he is deeply tied to the city of Boston, Massachusetts, where he was an integral component of the Democratic political machine there, and served four different times as Mayor (1914 to 1917, 1922 to 1925, 1930 to 1933, and 1946 to 1949). He was defeated six times, the last three coming in 1949, 1951 and 1955, which signaled the end of his political career. In 1993 author Jack Beatty published a work about him titled "The Rascal King: The Life and Times of James Michael Curley".
