Kathleen Patricia Barnes, 76, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Feb. 17, at ManorCare-Waterloo.

She was born Feb. 13, 1942, in rural Waterloo, daughter of Ray and Ila Abbott Deerfield. She married Thomas Barnes, and the two later divorced.

Kathleen completed ninth grade at the Orange Township School. She spent most of her working career as a nanny and enjoyed spending time with children.

Survived by two sons, Bill (Kim) Deerfield of Waterloo and Tim (Shenita) Barnes of Fairbanks; a daughter, Diane Barnes of Waterloo; a brother, Jim (Linda) Deerfield of Waterloo; four sisters, Rosie (Ron) Robinson of Alta Vista, Linda (Tom) Kastli of Waterloo, Judy Di Giovanni of Charles City and Ila (Al) Kastli of Waterloo; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her parents; a brother: Mike Deerfield; two sisters, Elsie Parks and Chris Nieman; a son, Jeffery Barnes; and a daughter, Michelle Nichols.

Family-directed services 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at Rivers Edge Christian Church, with burial at Garden of Memories Cemetery at a later date. Family-directed visitation for an hour before services Saturday at the church. Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, Waterloo, is assisting the family.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Kathleen enjoyed working on her puzzle books; visiting her best friend, Annie Lee; and shopping with her daughter-in-law, Kim. She also enjoyed going to auctions. She loved her family and was grateful for all of the time they were able to spend together.
