Myrtle Sue Sanford Britton, 85 years old, of Vista Knoll Rd., Candler, died Monday, February 19th, 2018, at her home after a long battle with Dementia.

She is survived by her children, Jeffrey Allan Britton and Joi Anita Kelley (Patrick); her grandchildren, Susan Annette Steele, Sara Kaitlyn Kelley, Erin Glynn Kelley, and Logan Patrick Kelley. She is also survived by her sisters Katherine Petrucelli and June Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jeff Kenneth Britton, her parents, Walter Eugene Sanford and Willie Whitmire Sanford, and her sister, Francis Sanford Taylor.

Myrtle Sue grew up in the Enka Village and went to Sand Hill and Enka schools. She was a star guard for Dot Humphreys basketball team at Sand Hill. She was devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. She started out working as a telephone operator and was the one who said, "Number please" when you picked up the phone.

She married Kenneth Britton and had Jeff and Joi, and was a devoted mother of two smart kids. Little wonder that they both loved to read as she read to them and made sure they had books to read and they learned to read long before they started school. As the kids got older, she went to work for Hominy Baptist Daycare and ended up cooking all of the meals for the kids. When she was out one time for surgery, she went back to work and one little boy came running up to her and said, "Ms. Myrtle, please, please make us some sausage and cheese muffins!". Of course she did.

She was the caregiver when her mom became housebound and in just a short time after her mom passed away, her sister Frances became ill and she took care of her too. She was a great cook, a talented seamstress, a decorator and collector. Her mother said that of all four girls, she was the most stubborn. The person who said "never mess with a mountain woman who has made up her mind" had Myrtle Sue in mind.

The family would like to thank Park Ridge Hospital, Pisgah Manor and Four Seasons Hospice.

Funeral services for Myrtle Sue will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
