Daniel L. “Dan” Shaw, age 70 of Mount Vernon went home to be with the Lord late Monday afternoon, February 19, 2018 at Knox Community Hospital.

He was born on July 22, 1947 in Berkshire, Ohio the son of the late John H. and Bertha Ruth (Price) Shaw.

In his early teen years, the family moved to Centerburg where Dan graduated high school in 1966. After graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army. He served under the 199 Light Infantry Brigade as a member of the Red Catcher’s Unit. He was a combat duty soldier in Vietnam where he earned 2 Purple Hearts for his acts of heroism.

Dan drove truck for over 20 years and worked for the City of Mount Vernon, Street Department for 25 years.

His service to his country was a huge part of his life and that was reflected in the service organizations he belonged. He held memberships in the Knox County Veteran’s Council, American Legion #460, AmVets Post #95, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Delaware Chapter, Past commissioner of the Knox County Service Office, and a life member of DAV. He was also quite proud of the opportunity to recently take the Honor Flight.

Dan was also a member of the Centerburg Conservation Club.

He loved his grandchildren and he loved fishing. He didn’t know a stranger and when out traveling with Teresa in their RV, he was always making friends. Country and family were a huge part of who he was.

He will be missed by his wife Teresa; her children Maya Castillo of Albuquerque, New Mexico, MacNeil Freeman of Mount Vernon, Ohio, Jessica (Josh) Morgan of Marengo, Kristina Seefeldt of Mount Vernon, Anthony Seefeldt of San Diego, California; grandchildren Jade Trujillo, Coral Trujillo, Ayden Martin, Jaxton Morgan, and Zander Morgan; siblings John Carl (Pat) Shaw, Virginia (Jim) Riley, Evelyn (Jim) Mason, Tom (Carol) Shaw, William (Donna) Shaw, and Cathy (Dennis) Cantrell; brother-in-law William Bruck; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Robert Shaw and his sister Charlotte Bruck.

A Celebration of Dan’s Life will take place on Friday, February 23, 2018 at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 637 North State Route 61, Sunbury, Ohio 43074 at 1 PM followed by full military honors. Friends may call on the family from 11 AM until the time of the service. Following the services, a meal will be held at the Centerburg Conservation Club, 5680 Sycamore Rd, Centerburg, OH 43011.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to a Children’s Hospital of one’s choice.
