LTC John Michael “Mike” McAuley (Retired), age 66 of Wellsville, Kansas passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa, Kansas. Funeral services will be 10AM, Friday, February 23, 2018 at Wilson’s Funeral Home in Wellsville. Visitation will be 6-8PM, Thursday evening, also at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow services at the Wellsville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wellsville Baptist Church Hospitality Fund or the Wellsville High School Alumni Scholarship Fund in care of Wilson’s, PO Box 486, Wellsville, Kansas 66092.
LTC John Michael “Mike” McAuley (Retired) was born October 8, 1951, in Ottawa, Kansas the son of AV and Emma (Campbell) McAuley. He grew up in Wellsville and graduated from WHS in 1969. After graduation he worked for Rosenberry Farms and Body Shop. He joined the Kansas Army National Guard and on June 14, 1969, he married Beverly Ann Moss at the Wellsville Baptist Church. They would have been married 49 years this June. She survives at the home. Mike worked for Western Electric in Merriam for 10 years until in 1980 he went full time AGR Officer for the Kansas Army National Guard. He retired from the guard after almost 30 years of service. After retirement, he worked for over 10 years as a consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton in Kansas City.
Mike loved fishing, tying flies, cooking BBQ and enjoyed painting. He loved camping and spending time with his grandchildren and children. He was a loving, generous and kind man and will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Mike is survived by his wife of the home; his beloved lab, Maggie Mae; daughter, Shannon Young of Kansas City, daughter and son-in-law, Kelli and Jay Thompson of Wellsville; daughter and son-in-law, Megan and Jeremy Lee of Wellsville; brother and sister-in-law, Pat and Debbie McAuley of Wellsville; sister and brother-in-law, Charnell and Keith Gray of Hutchinson, KS; grandchildren: Jordan Thompson, Jordyn (Kyle) Mellies, Mercedes Thompson, Michaela Farmer, Kegan Young, Peyton Young, Conner Thompson, Jacob Lee, Brody Lee and Caden Thompson; great-grandchildren: Isabelle, Malakai, and Emma; and many nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents.
