CLAY CENTER — John J. "Jay" Sullivan, 71, of Clay Center died Saturday, March 31, 2007, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Harvard. Burial will be in Clay Center Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. McLaughlin Funeral Home in Clay Center is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Sullivan was born Feb. 22, 1936, at Sutton to John E. and Margaret "Peg" (Burke) Sullivan.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Marcele "Cele" of Clay Center; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Michael and Carolyn of Aurora, Patrick of Clay Center, Joseph and Zoe of Mt. Sterling, Ill., Timothy and Lisa of Aurora and Thomas and Angela of Lincoln; three daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Leslie Botchwey of Willard, Mo., Kelly and Danny Morrow of Omaha and Susanna and Jim Kamler of Geneva; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy and Avery Bennett of Lincoln and Joan and David Bouse of Tecumseh.

Additional survivors include 19 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

He married Marcele M. Bachman on May 16, 1956, at Shenandoah, Iowa.

He graduated from Clay Center High School in 1954 and the University of Nebraska College of Law, Juris Doctor, with Distinction. He was a member of the Order of the Coif, Allen Moot Court Competition Board, Nebraska Bar Association, Tenth Judicial Bar Association & Past President, Member Delta Theta Phi Legal Fraternity. He was Clay County Attorney for eight years, Juvenile Law Specialist.

He was a member of Clay Center Community Club, Chairman Clay Center Health Committee, Emergency Medical Technician 30 years, Active in Vietnamese Doctor Relocation and Representative to the Medical Education for Doctors in Communities (MEDIC), Clay County Representative and Past President of Central Nebraska Comprehensive Health Planning Council, Secretary and Director Clay Center Development Corporation, Assistant Scout Master of Troop 182, announcer, umpire, coach Clay Center Youth Baseball Program, Clay Center Community Theater Organizational Committee, Treasurer. He performed in several comedies and dramas, and worked back stage for all musicals. He was also school attorney.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Harvard, where he served as a lector, parish attorney, chairman of DDP (Diocesan Development Program), sponsor of CYO & CCD (Children Youth Groups), building committee, parish council, general maintenance and cleanup of the church's facilities.

The honors he earned were Community Booster of the Year, 1972, Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Award, 1976, 2001 Award of Special Merit, Nebraska Bar Association and Silver Beaver Boy Scout of America Leadership Award.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Shriners' Hospital of Children, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607-1460 or Boy Scout Troop 182, Clay Center, NE 68933.
