H. B. Ihnen was born to "Ben" G. and Bertha (Kollman) Ihnen, 19 July 1895 in Camp Point Illinois. He went to school in Camp Point and La Prairie.

On 12 May 1917 he married Ethel Keppner. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1967.

H. B. Ihnen worked as a farmer. He served for two years as vice chairman on the Board of Agricultural Advisers, appointed in 1969 by Governor Richard Ogilvie.

He also served in the Illinois House of Representatives for a two year term beginning in 1946.

From 1950 until 1964 he served seven consecutive terms in the Illinois House. He served again from 1966 until his retirement from legislature in 1968.

H. B. Ihnen died 12 August 1975 in a Quincy Illinois hospital.

Reverend Wayne Stoutenberg presided over the funeral for H. B. Ihnen, held at Luther Memorial church. Burial followed, at Trinity cemetery.
