KINSTON - Mary Bryan Wooten Cooper died February 17, 2018, at her home in Kinston, surrounded by her family. Born January 14, 1942, in Kinston, Mary Bryan was the only child of Margaret Bryan Wooten and Ralph Leland Wooten. She called both Wootens Crossroads and Institute home.

Mary Bryan was a graduate of Duke University with a degree in English. At Duke, she met the love of her life and husband of 531/2 years, Ed Cooper. They remained in Durham for Ed medical studies, and subsequently lived in Charlottesville, VA, Dover, DE, Roanoke, VA, and returned to Durham, while Ed completed his military service and medical residencies.

In 1975, they settled in Kinston where Ed established his medical practice. Mary Bryan relished being back home and focused on raising their three sons and serving the community in various ways. She was active in Garden Club, Medical Auxiliary, and Lenoir Memorial Hospital Pink Ladies, and she volunteered at many Parrott Academy games and projects.

She was happiest down at the beach, on Topsail Island, where she gathered with family and friends to enjoy the ocean.

Mary Bryan is survived by her husband and best friend, Dr. Edwin Branan Cooper, Jr., and their three children: Mr. Branan Wooten Cooper of Landenberg, PA, and his wife, Desiree, and their children, Sean and Heather; Dr. James Bryan Cooper of Greenville, NC, and his wife, Monica, and their children, Bryan, Araceli, and Alex; and Dr. Patrick Arendell Cooper of Washington, DC, and his husband, Dr. Nicholas Dobelbower. In addition, she is survived by a close-knit band of cousins.

A service of celebration will be held at Institute United Methodist Church on Bryan-Hardy Road in Institute on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 11 a.m. A luncheon will follow. There will be a private graveside service later in the afternoon at Westview Cemetery in Kinston.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Bryan Friendship Fund, Institute UMC, 4844 Bryan-Hardy Road, LaGrange, NC 28551, or to the Dr. Ed and Mary Bryan Cooper Promising Student Scholarship at the Pitt County Medical Society, 401 West 1st Street, Greenville, NC 27834.
