Major League Baseball Player. He was a pitcher for Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox from 1954 to 1961. He played baseball at both Cheraw High School (Cheraw, South Carolina) and Elon College before signing with the Boston Red Sox in 1951. He played in the Red Sox farm system during the 1951 season before joining the United States Army, where he served from 1951 to December of 1953. After leaving the military, he joined the Red Sox for the 1954 season. He played for them for eight seasons before being released after the 1961 season. He was named to the American League All-Star team in 1956. His career statistics included 91 wins, 82 losses, and a 4.00 ERA. After being released, he decided to retire from the sport after not getting offers from any other teams. He went on to work as a probation officer for the state of South Carolina for twenty-five years. After retiring from this position, he spent time as a pitching coach for his old high school baseball team. He was inducted into the South Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.
