Candace Joy Brooks, 71, of La Grande, peacefully passed into eternity on Monday, January 1, 2018 at her residence.

Candy—as most people called her—was born November 26, 1946 in La Grande, Oregon to Robert and Lovell (Farquhar) Howard. She spent her childhood years through college in La Grande and then resided in the Seattle area and Federal Way, WA before returning to La Grande in 1983.

Some of Candy’s most memorable employers were Keith O’Briens in La Grande, Sunfari Air Travel Club and Boeing in Seattle, and Ackerman Elementary School at Eastern Oregon University, where she cherished working with children. She was a devoted mother to her son and two step-sons. A friend to many, she loved to laugh and was always up for a good game of cards. She enjoyed many creative hobbies like calligraphy and macramé, and was known for being quite the star athlete in her youth. What she enjoyed more than anything was playing golf— which became a lifelong passion of hers. She was coach of La Grande High School’s girl’s golf team, and an active member of La Grande Country Club, where she won several tournaments in her youth and later as an adult. She even recorded a few holes-in-one over the years.

Candy is survived by her husband, Robert; son, Cody Cupper (Abigail) of Portland, OR; step-sons, Tyler Brooks (Sarah) of Pendleton, OR and Andy Brooks of La Grande, OR; brother, Mike Howard (Kolleen) of Tucker, GA; 3 grandchildren (Ethan, Cy and Tess, whom she affectionately called her “Cupcakes”), a niece (Trisha) and 4 nephews (Bruce, Turtle, Sean and Walt). She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Lovell and brother, Robert L. Howard.

Candy was also known for her deep love of animals. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Blue Mountain Humane Society, 3212 Hwy 30, La Grande OR 97850. She was also very passionate about the development of young golfers. A donation to the La Grande High School Golf program can be made through Tiger Booster, PO Box 2991, La Grande, OR 97850.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Homestead Country Gathering Church, 60588B McAlister Road, on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 5:00pm. A reception will follow at the La Grande Country Club, 10605 McAlister Road.
