Mrs. Eva Ella Russell Killed As Son's Car Crashes Into Tree
The 11th person to die in an automobile crash in the county this year, Mrs. Eva Ella Russell, 38, of 16 Deering Street, was killed early yesterday morning when a car driven by her son went off the road in New Ashford into a tree.
Her son, Lealon L. Russell, 19, sustained multiple cuts around the face, possible internal injuries and shock, but is today reported in good condition by officials at Pittsfield General Hospital.
State police officers, investigating the one-car crash, said the Russell's Ford sedan left Route 7 exactly one mile south of the Williamstown-New Ashford town line.
Mrs. Russell was thrown part way through the windshield by the impact of the car hitting the tree directly head on. The front of the car, which was recently purchased by Lealon Russell, was demolished.
Returning From Visit
They were returning from a visit with Mrs. Russell's sister at North Hoosick, N.Y., and were preceded by Franklyn L. Russell, husband of the victim, who was driving another car home from New York. It was explained that young Russell took his car to New York in case he wanted to stay over with his relatives.
Following the 1 AM accident, Mrs. Russell was taken to Pittsfield General Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival by Medical Examiner Albert C. England.
Officers John J. Loughlin and James P. McBride responded to the accident call. It is still under investigation.
Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Francis Beattie of Bennington, Betty and Emily E. Russell of 16 Deering Street; a sister, Mrs. Mary Bump of Shaftsbury, Vt.; three brothers, David Moon of Buskirk, N.Y., William and Richard Moon of Bennington, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be tomorrow at 2 from the Lummus Funeral Home. Friends may call today from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9.
