NEWPORT NEWS - Carl A. Parker, Jr. 88, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2018. Carl was a lifelong resident of Newport News and he graduated from Warwick High School where he was captain of the baseball team. He had been affiliated with the Brooklyn Dodgers at one time and, later in life, he retired from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company after 47 years of dedicated service.

He and his brother helped their father to build numerous homes in the area. Carl was a member of the local Ruritan Club and a member of Hilton Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher and later, Superintendent, he was also a Life Deacon. He was an avid golfer and Dallas Cowboys fan. His gentle spirit attracted all children and he was a father figure to so many.

Carl is preceded in death by his parents, Carl, Sr. and Helen Parker; sister, Dorothy Johnson; and brother, Ralph Parker. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jean Howell Parker; children, Debra Lee Parker and Cheryl Dee Parker; brother, Robert Parker, grandchildren, Ryan Anderson Hudgins, Brittaney Aris Hudgins, Leslie Tyler Eldridge; seven great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and other extended family members including sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Thursday Feb. 22 at Hilton Baptist Church with a funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. and the burial immediately following at Peninsula Memorial Park. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.
