Mary L. Smallwood, 96 of Effingham, passed away Friday, February 16, 2018 at Heartland Christian Village in Neoga.

Mary was born April 25, 1921, the daughter of Francis A. and Bessie M. (Miller) Thomure. She married Lucas Smallwood on May 23, 1968 in Mobile, Alabama and he preceded her in death in 2001.

Mary was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham and a former member of Ladies of Charity and the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary.

Mary is survived by daughter, Candace "Candy" Vail; her son, Robert "Bob" (friend, Marie) VanDeList; five grandchildren, Denise (Steve) Wolke, Keith (Tammie) VanDeList, Kenny (Kelly) Kocher, Brian (Amanda) Vail and Benjamin VanDeList; ten great-grandchildren, Amanda (Paul) Niebrugge, Victoria (Cole) Miller, Steven (Alexis) Wolke, Michael Wolke, Zachary Wolke; Alex Kocher, Nicholas Kocher, Noah Kocher, Allie Moyer and Bryson Vail; great-great-grandchildren, Charlotte Niebrugge and Crue Miller.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband and son, George.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham with a 4:00 p.m. ladies rosary.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Anthony Church.
