Obituary

Linda Busse Day, of Stockbridge MA, died peacefully on November 1, 2017 at Mt. Carmel Care Center in Lenox.

Born in the Bronx, NY, she was the daughter of the late Ewald & Christine Bueshing Busse who were both German immigrants. She grew up in Elmont, LI and Huntington, CT and graduated from Shelton High School (CT) in 1960.

She then attended Drew University and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Zoology and Chemistry in 1964. In 1965 she married Laurence Eden Day in Bridgeport, CT. Soon after her marriage, she attended the University of Bridgeport and received her Master of Science degree in education in 1967. She then began her lifelong career as an educator at the newly opened Monument Mountain Regional High School in Gt. Barrington where she and her husband Larry taught in the Science Department. He predeceased her in 1980. She was appointed principal of Monument Mountain in May of 1983.

Linda continued her education at North Adams State College where she obtained her Master of Educational Administration in 1985. In 1993 she became the first female Superintendent of Schools in Berkshire County as Superintendent for the Berkshire Hills Regional School District.

Linda was very involved in her community, which she loved. She was a communicant and Vestry member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Stockbridge. She was a board member at the Norman Rockwell Museum from 1987 - 1992, a Fairview Hospital board member from 1995 - 1997 and a board member of the Berkshire County Chapter of the American Red Cross from 1993 - 1996. She was also a longtime member of the Gt. Barrington Rotary Club where she served as secretary, president and Board Member and was active until just before her death. Linda also served on the Stockbridge Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Board, the Berkshire United Way board and was a member of the Tuesday Club of Stockbridge.

In her spare time, Linda was a licensed private pilot. She loved gardening and home design, which was beautifully reflected in her own home. She also loved to travel and was an avid fan of science fiction. She loved beagles and her home was never without one, including her most recent beagle Lucy.

Although Linda had no immediate relatives, she has remaining family in Germany. She is also survived by members of her husband Larry's extended family. Linda understood the value of family and throughout her life created family circles with many in the Berkshires. Several families considered her one of their own, including the Scibeks, the Popes, the Cannings, the Tracys and the Ebbetts and Manzer families. Linda's sense of family reached out to her many friends, colleagues and neighbors in the community, where she was mentor, advisor, "sister" and most importantly a good friend.

SERVICE: A service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on November 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. The burial will be private.

Linda requested that there be no flowers and for donations to be made to the Gt. Barrington Rotary Scholarship Fund or the Berkshire Humane Society in her memory c/o FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230.
