Maria Salma Gray

Maria Salma Gray, resident of Visalia, Ca. will be laid to rest on Tuesday February 10, 2018. A church service will be held at 10:00 AM at St. Anthony's Catholic church, 1060 F. St. in Reedley, CA.followed directly by a graveside ceremony at Smith Mountain Cemetery in Dinuba. A rosary will be held Monday from 5-7pm at Dopkins Funeral Home at 189 S J St. in Dinuba, CA.

Maria was born in the small town of Guillermo Prieto in Durango Mexico on May 22, 1949.

Being the eldest sister of 10 siblings total, she was no stranger to hard work having had to help take care of her younger siblings while she was still a child herself, and having to venture and live away from home to find work to help support herself and her large family. She migrated to the United States in the early 80's and continued working hard as a single mother and field worker, picking oranges and grapes mostly. She went on to learn English while in her early thirties, earn her GED, and earn her Cosmetology license. While working hard as a hair stylist first at Supercuts in Visalia, then at the Golden Curl in Visalia, followed by Steve's Hair Salon in Ivanhoe, she was also a devoted wife and loving mother. In 1998 she applied for and proudly earned Citizenship in the United States. She eventually opened her own shop, Maria's Hair Salon in Farmersville, CA and after many years moved on to and retired from Walnut Park Retirement community where she styled hair and touched the hearts of countless residents who frequented the hair salon during their stay there.

Maria was a woman with a strong exterior who, on the inside, possessed a nostalgic and caring heart and often put the needs of family and friends before her own. She loved listening to Christian and instrumental music such as Kenny G. and also Mexican Ranchera music, Vicente Fernandez being her favorite. She loved the outdoors and went on daily walks engaged in prayer and to admire the beauties the Lord created in nature as it changed from season to season.

She lifted the spirits of others through a personality that combined a direct, yet caring and often humorous manner. Even strangers seemed to often approach her and engage in light hearted chit chat which often led to lasting friendships. She had a way with people that's not easy to come by, but people often admire and cherish when encountered. Maria was no stranger to hard work and the struggles that come with life, many that she spoke of, others unspoken but that lingered beneath her surface. Perhaps this is what made her naturally receptive to the life struggles of others and feeling the need to consistently protect, nurture, and give to others.

Maria was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband Tommy Gene Gray.

She is survived by her only child and daughter Yasmin SairaHolbert, 2 loving grandchildren; grandson Teal Holbert and granddaughter Marissa Holbert, and a number of other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.

TULARE COUNTY, California - The woman found dead on the Kings River on Thursday has been identified as a woman reported missing last year.

Around 1:45 p.m., Tulare County Sheriff's detectives responded to a location on the Kings River just south of Avenue 416 after a nearby farmworker discovered a body near the river.

The coroner responded and later identified the woman as someone who'd been reported missing.

Maria Salma Gray, 68, had been reported missing on April 15, 2017.

There were no obvious signs of foul play, and it was believed Gray drowned.

At the time she had been reported missing, her vehicle was located about an eighth mile upstream from where she had been discovered, and a thorough search of the area was conducted at that time, the Sheriff's Office said.

Family members have been notified, and the case has been closed.
