Billy D. “Jake” Carr, 84, a lifelong resident of Calhoun, TN went to his Heavenly home on Friday, February 16, 2018 in a local hospital.

He was born on May 13, 1933 in Calhoun a son of the late Hubert & Nelle Carr.

Jake graduated from Calhoun High School in 1951 where he played basketball and baseball. In May 1996, he was inducted into the Calhoun Alumni Hall of Fame. In 1952 he joined the Shawnee Hawks, a minor league baseball team in Shawnee, OK. In 1955 he joined the United States Army where he faithfully served his country during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge, Jake returned to his hometown of Calhoun where he was involved in many civic affairs in Calhoun including the Volunteer Fire Department and a commissioner for the City for many years and also served as Mayor of Calhoun from 1975-1981. After 39 years of service, he retired from Bowater in February 1994. Jake was an active member of Calhoun First Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Jake is preceded in death by his loving wife Jo Shamblin Carr, one brother Bobby Carr.

Jake leaves behind to cherish his memory his two children daughter-Teresa Quirk and husband Jerry and son- Doug Carr and his wife Kim, four grandchildren Karra Carr Withrow (Bart), Tanner Quirk, Katie Carr and Madison Quirk, two great grandchildren Molly Kate Withrow and Ella Withrow, three sisters Lillian Matthews, Rose Lyle and Patsy Burger (Charles “Footsie”), other extended family members, his church family and a host of special friends.

A celebration of his life is planned for Monday night, February 19, 2018 at 7:00 PM at the Calhoun First Baptist Church located at 107 Church Street in Calhoun, TN with the Reverend Kevin Cheatham officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 4:00 PM until the 7:00 service time. The interment and committal service will take place on Tuesday afternoon, February 20, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the Calhoun Cemetery with Bart Withrow, Jerry Quirk, Tanner Quirk, Gary Knight, Bill Long and J.W. Lee serving as pallbearers. The service will include full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donations be made in Billy’s memory to the Calhoun Cemetery Association. The donations can be sent to Calhoun Cemetery Association c/o Eddie Smith 335 CR 20, Calhoun, TN 37309.
