CALHOUN, Henry Walker, of Richmond, passed away peacefully and into the loving arms of his Heavenly Father on February 14, 2018, at the age of 95. He was born on March 10, 1922, in Prince Edward County, Va., to the late Thomas Addison and Ellie Maude Allen Calhoun. Henry was the youngest of three sons and was preceded in death by his brothers, Addison Allen and James Richard Calhoun. Henry is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 65 years, May Katharine Calhoun. He is survived by his five sons, Thomas A. Calhoun (Pamela), Philip H. Calhoun (Valerie), David A. Calhoun (Julie), Andrew R. Calhoun and Jonathan C. Calhoun (Cathy). He is also survived by eight grandchildren, TC, Brian, Christopher, Kevin, Sarah, Mason, Sydney and Henry II; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Henry graduated from Farmville High School in 1940. After spending several years helping his father run the family farm while his brothers served in World War II, Henry, with the blessing of his father, joined the United States Navy and served his country in World War II, mainly in the Pacific Ocean from 1943 to the end of the war in December 1945. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1945, with assistance from the G.I. Bill, he enrolled at The University of Virginia where he earned varsity letters in cross country and track. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1951 with a degree in Commerce. After college, he married the love of his life, May Katharine. In 1953, he went to work for the Farm Credit Association in Richmond, where he remained for over 33 years. Working at Farm Credit allowed him to combine his love of farming with his commerce degree in assisting farmers, primarily in the eastern part of Virginia. Henry was a member of Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church for over 65 years and served numerous terms as an Elder and Deacon. He was also a long-time member of the Short Pump Ruritans and was actively involved in the Boy Scouts serving on the Board of Troop 713 sponsored by Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church and where four of his sons earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Another great love in Henry's life was Appleberry, the family farm in the mountains of southern Albemarle County which he transformed into a beautiful retirement and weekend mountain retreat. He loved Appleberry, but most of all he loved sharing Appleberry with others. He was known by many as the "King of Appleberry." The family would like to extend a special thanks to all his caregivers: Melanie, David, Kim G., Kim A. and Sandra, who diligently and lovingly cared for him during the last years of his life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church, 7000 Park Avenue, Richmond, Va.
