Viola Mae Vande Noord was born November 29, 1922, to Asa and Jennie Wilma (Van Peursem) Niemantsverdriet on a farm near Otley, Iowa. She passed away at Jefferson Place in Pella, on February 12, 2018.
Viola graduated from Battle Ridge School in Otley, on August 10, 1937. After graduation, she worked in restaurants around Pella. She went on to attend the Ottumwa Beauty Academy, graduating on August 12, 1949. Her first job in the beauty business was in September 1949, at Vera’s Beauty Shoppe. She moved on from Vera’s in 1950, to start her own business with partner Bernice Van Zee. Their shop was called Lady Fair Beauty Salon.
She was united in marriage to John Vande Noord on February 10, 1961, at the Bethany Reformed Church in Des Moines, Iowa. To this union they were blessed with one son, Lowell. Together they made their home in Pella. In the spring of 1962, Viola moved her beauty business, Viola’s Beauty Salon, into the basement of their new home.
Their next big adventure for John and Viola, came in the form of a Canadian Camp. They bought Dave’s Wilderness Camp in the fall of 1964. The camp was located in Ontario, and it took them 14 hours to drive there from Pella. Once they arrived, it was 12 miles away from the camp so they parked the car and took a boat the rest of the way. The camp ran from May to October each year. John and Viola lived in Pella the rest of the year. After 14 years of camp fun, they sold it in 1978.
Viola decided to end her career in the beauty business in 2010. She enjoyed over 60 years serving her many clients. Viola was a member of Third Reformed Church for 67 years. Beside bible study in the Ruth Circle, these ladies would serve food at Tulip Time in the church basement. They also made Dutch letters to sell. On February 11, 1990, Heartland Reformed Church was forming, and John and Viola were charter members. Viola spent a lot of time serving with the Willing Workers raising funds to help pay for the church kitchen. This group successfully raised enough to purchase all of the appliances and all the dishes. Viola was the treasurer and the organizer of Willing Workers and she enjoyed the fellowship with this group of ladies. She went on to help start the Dorcas Society Bible study group. Viola also loved to sing and participated in the church choir.
She is survived by her son Lowell and Ruth Vande Noord of Harvey and their children: Jeremy and Jodi Vande Noord of Prairie City, Jason Vande Noord of Pella, Travis and Krissie Vande Noord of Shawnee, Kansas; four great-grandchildren: Jaydon, Janae, Evie and Gus Vande Noord; and many nieces and nephews.
Viola was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents, her parents-in-law Henry and Kate Vande Noord, her sister Bernice and Wilbur Hugen, her sister Leola and Virgil Klein, and her nephew Wayne Hugen.
