A member of the United States Air Force, and then the United States Coast Guard during his 24-year military career, John was a proud Veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, and a member of the VFW. After retiring from the Coast Guard in 1973, he was the Building Inspector and Health and Code Enforcement Officer for the Towns of North Hampton/Hampton, N.H. He was a Free and Accepted Mason of St. John's Lodge, a Scottish Rite 32nd degree, and a member of the Ancient Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He was an avid golfer, and won many tournaments.
John married Jean Nancy Campbell in 1954. They had two daughters, and were wonderful parents, providing a very happy life for their girls, living in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and then New Hampshire -- and being "True New Englanders", they instilled a great love and respect in their daughters for New England and the Atlantic Ocean. In later years before his return to N.H., John and Jean lived in South Elgin, Ill., to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren who were at that time located in the Midwest.
John is survived by his daughter Judith (Medlock) and her husband Scott Richardson of Tewksbury, Mass., and grandchildren Ryan Andrew Hayes of Excelsior, Minn., Jeffrey Alan Hayes of St. Paul, Minn., Kerry Ann Hayes of Duluth, Minn., and Jillian Jean Steamer and Daniel Medlock Steamer of Elgin, Ill. He was pre-deceased by his wife Jean of 60 years, and his daughter Karen (Medlock) Steamer of St. Charles Ill.
SERVICES: A short service with private burial will be conducted at a later date in the North Burial Ground, located in Bristol, R.I.
