Born in Green Point on March 18, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Christian and Elizabeth Strouphauer Kohr. She graduated from Jonestown High School. During WW II, she manufactured artillery shells at Bethlehem Steel and was later employed by the Bethel and Mt. Aetna telephone company as a switchboard operator.
Verna started and ran Miller’s Grocery Store at Indiantown Gap for 35 years, building a reputation for friendly service and “hoagies” made with love. Verna had the privilege of meeting many local families, military members and the lieutenant governors who were housed at Indiantown Gap. She met so many people at the store that she seemed to know someone everywhere she sent.
Verna was an honorary member of the Indiantown Gap Officer’s Club where, for a time, she served as Chaplain. She was a person of strong faith and a devoted member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church for over 60 years. During that time, she served as Adult Sunday school teacher, choir director and directed many church plays.
Verna was a warm and compassionate person who enjoyed socializing, playing cards, crocheting and dedicating her time and talents to the church, the American Red Cross, the PTA and the Jonestown High School Alumni Association.
She is survived by her children Fay Cormack of Jonestown, Harold D. Miller, Jr., of Melbourne, FL and Lori wife of Kerry Zettlemoyer of Grantville, as well as five grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother Edwin Kohr and sisters Helen Hoffa, Violet Krammes and Florence Berry.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at 8:30 a.m. at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 6 Boundary Rd., Indiantown Gap. A funeral service will follow at 9:30 a.m. followed by the burial at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
